FIFA World Cup 2026 group stage — why the draw matters
The FIFA World Cup 2026 group stage features the most consequential draw in tournament history. With 12 groups, draw position determines which pot teams are placed in. The "Group of Death" in 2026 is widely projected as Group A — containing Argentina (defending champions), Mexico (co-hosts), Canada (co-hosts) and Morocco (2022 semi-finalists). Three of those four teams have legitimate aspirations to advance. Only two go through automatically. Strong seeding protects Argentina and France from the toughest groups, but the expanded format means every nation has a slightly higher chance of advancing — the 8 best third-placed teams also qualify for the Round of 32. This benefits historically strong nations that underperform their group, such as Mexico or Belgium. Group B (Spain, Germany, Japan) is our pick for the second toughest group. Spain and Germany could both advance but Japan (40+ FIFA ranking points below both) always overperforms. See our dark horses page and Canada picks for more.
